The magic of monoprinting

I have finally come to the end of the challenge for October set by Kim Herringe for those who have taken her online monoprinting workshop. I'm pretty impressed I did a print for each day and I now have a stack of prints which can become cards and backgrounds for other projects.

I've certainly learnt a lot more about how the layers interact and how the different paints behave. I've also discovered a new love...Payne's grey...how did I ever live without it?!

Paint like Georgia O'Keeffe

Today I'm posting a quick catch up of what I've been up to. I had a great night 'Painting like Georgia O'Keefe' with Something Less Boring via Zoom. £5 for two and half hours of great tutorial. In London you can hardly get a beer for that. The participants were from all over the world and it was great to hear some say they had their first snow of the year or they were off to put the tea on when I was getting ready for bed. 

Here's mine next to the reference photo of O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed. It made me really appreciate the skill needed to get the sharp lines and smooth blending. It's a style that really appeals to me. I have a painting on the go (that's been waiting for over a year to be finished) in a not dissimilar style.

I've fallen behind a bit with the challenge for Kim Herringe's gel plate monoprinting course participants.

These photos are of the exact same print. The top layer was printed using irridescent gold paint, which becomes more or less obvious as you tilt the print. If you look carefully you can see the tiered cake shapes underneath the flowers.

21. Banana

This one took me a bit out of my comfort zone as the colours feel very uncomfotable to me. I think it's rather ugly but hopefully it does have the essence of a banana.

After a lovely day messing around in the craft room I have caught up with the inktober monoprinting challenge set by Kim Herringe for those following her course. I've used a mixture of commercial stencils and ones cut myself from paper.

I love the versatility of gel printing. I think the secret is in the paint and the paper. I've invested in more Golden open acrylics, which stay wet long enough to pull a print and a ghost print. I use a 200gsm coated thin card which seems to be flexible enough to pick up a lot of the details but robust enough to not fall apart with multiple paint layers. 

I think the dog going for a walk on the moor is my favourite. Which is yours?

Inktober

Hello

Inktober was started by artist Jake Parker as a challenge to improve his inking skills. Follow the link to find out more. In the spirit of creating for creating's sake Kim Herringe has set those taking her online workshop a gel-printing challenge, to create something every day for a month, with prompts if we want to follow them.

       

It's a great excuse to delve around in my mask and stencil collection, as well as use the leaves my mother-in-law has sent from her garden. So far I have used acrylic paints but I do have some acrylic inks tucked away which I might just have to dig out and play with.

I love that however much you plan a sequence you can't really predict what's going to happen as the layers combine. I'm slowly learning to accept the outcome whatever, and just enjoy the process.

Gorgeous gelli

Hope you've had a lovely weekend. The past week has been a bit chaotic, but after some much needed sleep, I've had another go at gel monoprinting with leaves. My mother-in-law kindly picked and pressed a variety of leaves and posted them. I also treated myself to a few more colours of Golden Open acrylic paint. They definitely make a huge difference and help to get all of the fine details. I've gone for something a bit more autumnal.

I can't recommend Kim Herringe's workshop via her online portal The Studio enough. She takes you through the printing process, the best equipment to use, composition, how to make your own registration board, how to mount work and how to make your own gel plate.

It's quite addictive so now I just have to think of what to do with all the prints. Any suggestions?

Big on botanicals

Hello

I'm here today to show you my first steps gel monoprinting with botanicals. I've signed up to Kim Herringe's online gelatin plate monoprinting workshop. There are 30 lessons over 6 modules with very clear videos and PDFs. It's lots of fun.

I am rather limited in the botanicals department, as I have a small balcony with some half dead plants, therefore I shall be out and about this week and I also have my mother-in-law on the case, who has a fabulous garden!

These are the most interesting of my attempts getting to grips with first generation and ghost prints and what's best and where.
